THERE IS HOPE FOR YOUNG BLACK MEN #Jobs

Friday, June 21, 2013

Molweni bahlali

I haven't thought about properly yet but I just got an idea call this CV section on this blog ''Siyasebenza'' which means ''We are working'' or ''We work'' in Xhosa and Zulu.  Apologies for not being consistent about the posts. The past two Fridays, I just didn't have the time to really focus on it.  I am working on turning this blog into a dot.com website (finally) and the day that happens will be the day people will be able to upload their CV's of info onto the blog in a consistent manner, which will take the responsibility away from me, meaning it will be more efficient.

I'm still figuring out how to do this whole thing so let's call this testing phase indefinitely. I'll keep trying different ways to disseminate this kind of information and see which is the most effective. Two weeks ago, I received a CV from a young man in East London who wants to go out to not only discover, but to help the world beyond the small Eastern Cape town. He has a BA Social Science in Organisational Psychology from Rhodes and currently works at a Maize and Grain Mill as Logistics Officer. I just fell asleep writing that job description. That is no place for a young person though, sorry Mill people.

So I sent him an email asking him what he actually wants to do and here's what he said:

''That's a difficult question to answer because most people do not understand what exactly I want to do. I hope you do though but its a long way till I get what I really want to do.

My main interest is research, I read up on a lot of issues that affect society particularly Social issues. Thats why I have been applying to at the SAIRR but it's impossible to get in there.  I've  looked at NGOs, particularly the ones that deal with assisting young people with getting advice on jobs etc...but thats not working out for me particularly well since Im struggling to find a job myself hahaha..

I would appreciate something where I could sit with a computer somewhere and read as much as I could about how to make peoples lives better but I dont want to be the one going outside to plant trees and play with little kids. I hope you understand what I mean.
Oh ya and Im still registered to do my honors (development studies) but I did not want to start untill I was sure I was at a company that matched my ambitions and understood what I would like to do. How I ended up doing logistics was a big mistake, I like it but its a job. I'd even take a significant pay cut if I got something worthwile to do.
I hope you understand, nobody seems to and it may be hard finding something exactly like what I want to do but as they always say "I'll start at the bottom"
Please help a brother out.  Oh ya and Id be willing to relocate anywhere but preferably to small towns just not in the Ec but Cpt would be ideal''.

I was really touched by this honest earnest response.  It gave me so much hope that a young black man has other ambitions than to be a CEO or a DJ (stereotypes are based on reality) and is truly passionate about research and helping others.  I have this young man's contact details if there is anybody out there who has an empty desk and a project for him to sink his teeth into.

I'll also try and find him something through a friend who is running a brilliant programme called Emthonjeni Arts in the small Eastern Cape town of Hamburg.  Nomi, expect a call from me. If you would like to help, please send me a message in the comments section or drop me a mail on missmillib@gmail.com

TWO JUNIOR JOBSEEKERS LOOKING FOR WORK IN PRODUCTION AND PUBLISHING

Friday, April 12, 2013

Hey dolls

I don't know where the time is running off to, it seriously feels like it's already June! And it looks and feels it outside.  Time is not on my side this week, haven't had enough to look through all the CV's so it will be a skinny picking today of just one of them. Soz guys, it also happens to be SA Fashion Week.

CV 1

Today's first CV is from a 20 something year old woman who is currently unemployed and lives in Johannesburg.  After studying editing, visual effects, producing, directing and script writing at AFDA, she didn't finish her degree because of financial constraints but got just about enough of the basics to get her a job at Sello Twala Productions as a Junior Editor in 2012.  Her duties there included editing first cuts, final mix visual credits and digitizing footage.  While she was studying  at AFDA, she was working as a shop assistant at Tiaan Nagel at 44 Stanley where her duties included sales and assisting the designer. Her interest in fashion saw her as an intern at Glamour Magazine assisting stylists with fashion shoots, doing returns and sourcing, planning lookbooks and other general interny duties.  She would like to get back into production starting at the bottom and working her way up.  I know production companies are always looking for fresh people to match their budget cuts!

CV 2

This young woman also lives in Johannesburg and currently works as a writer and social media content contributor at a local online entertainment, culture and fashion website.  She writes entertainment stories from around the continent about music and fashion, she conducts research on various topics related to what the online mag is about and also co-ordinates photo shoots.  Correction, she doesn't actually work there, she has been an intern for the last year. Amandla is what you have if you're willing to work somewhere for almost a year and not get paid. That means a lot these days. Before her current ''job'', she worked as an assistant Art Director at Coalstove Productions where her duties included working on sets, ensuring performers were appropriately dressed in necessary props and costumes and where she learned the back end of producing television. While she was studying her Bachelor of Public Administration (Public Affairs) and Politics at the Walter Sisulu University, she tried her hand at retail and worked at Solo Walking Fashion, a clothing store in Northgate before working as a sales assistant at Ice Watches. She is currently looking for work in the entertainment and publishing industries.

A CV, A VACANCY AND AN INTERNSHIP!

Friday, March 22, 2013

Hey guys

Well nothing really transpired from last week's appeal for suggestions on how to improve this mkokotela recruitment agency that I'm running and I've asked the universe for guidance. I shall wait. In the meantime, I'm just going to carry on with it the way it has been going with little bit of change.

This week, I have one strong CV's to post.  The others I've been receiving are mostly looking for PA positions, a lot of them who are qualified in other fields too but needing work experience.  There are too many to choose from and I am happy to send them through to anybody that might be looking for Personal Assistants.  Holler if you are interested.  The other one that I was going to post is from somebody who has fantastic work experience, references and I was salivating at the prospect of sharing it until I realised she lives in New York and is not even South African. I was like, ok cool, it's good to have that much reach and I would certainly love to help another human being but this platform at the moment is for South Africans as a result of our 40% unemployment rate and one of the biggest youth bulges in the world.  Anyway, here we go.

CV 1

''I'm smart, ambitious and am focused'', says the CV of one Johannesburg based Media Planner.  She is 30 years old and has 7 years experience in Media and Production planning, having recently spent the last 5 years working at Primedia-Unlimited Fashion Media as a production planner for Edgars and Red Square's fragrance clients.  She is currently unemployed and is looking for work in a similar field. Here is a breakdown of her experience:

Education

2002 - 2004 AAA School of Advertising: International Higher Diploma in Integrated Marketing
Communications - Specialized in Media Management , Marketing and Advertising

Work Experience

2011 - 2013 Primedia-Unlimited Fashion Media: Production Manager
Implementing the production process for all cosmetic and fragrance brands
                    Planning and Implementing production schedules
                    Regular Communication with print suppliers
Drawing up briefs/proofs of flighting reports
Responsible for getting client approval and sending off final artwork to print
Liaising with sales and design teams for production briefs
                    Coordinating campaign productions
Clients included Dior, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana and Clinique

2006 - 2011 Red Cherry Media Holdings: Implementation Media and Production Planner
Planning and Implementing TV and Radio Schedules
Drawing up contracts after booking Radio and TV space with media owners
Media Planning for short format shows
Productions co-ordinating for interactive TV and radio products ADS UP, WOTZ UP
Scripting for production and competition telephone lines
Clients included AVBOB, African Bank, Eskom, Meltz, TruCape, MNet Cares

I was at a shoot last week and the editor of a local lifestyle magazine asked me if I know of any strong sales executives to sell advertising space for the magazine which has a readership of up to 1.5 million people.  I said I would put the word out there, so if you have experience in Advertising Sales and you're looking for a new job with a really wonderful team of women, send me a mail and I'll forward it to the editor.

In other opportunity news, Women's Health Magazine in Cape Town is looking for editorial interns. This is a great opportunity to gain work experience if you are a freshly laid graduate of journalism and media studies.  The internship is unpaid so you'll have to negotiate with mama and papa for a few extra months of living in the nest but these things usually open doors to real jobs sooner rather than later if you put in enough effort.  The intern will be doing research, assisting with general editorial tasks, write some features which they will be paid for and just getting experience within an editorial team.  If you'd like to apply for this, drop me a mail at missmillib@gmail.com.  You can also send me an email if you have any other query.

Have a lekker weekend.

Quality vs Quantity

Friday, March 8, 2013

Hello people, that it's Friday means nothing to me because I have a full day of work tomorrow but happy Friday if you're not working this weekend!  It's time to post the best summaries from CV's I have received this week.  This week, a highly qualified PA and a Fashion Designer/Stylist are looking for jobs.  If you are an employer seeking one of these people and want to be connected to them, send me an email missmillib@gmail.com and if you are looking for a job and want to be connected to potential employers, you can also send me an email and I'll see what I can do.

BRIGHT YOUNG SOUTH AFRICANS ARE LOOKING FOR JOBS

Friday, February 22, 2013

Good morning good people, it's a beautiful Friday morning in Johottesburg! There's a special spring in my step today because there are three brand new CV's to share with the world!  Last week I was a guest on Radio Today's Chic Jozi show in which I spoke about this little initiative which I really hope grows into a bigger initiative. I urge you all to please spread the word about it, spread these CV's around if you know anyone looking to employ someone and to also send me an email if you would like yours to be uploaded here on Fridays.

I must admit, I'm kind of ''so bored'' of the traditional CV structure. Hayi kabi. Now that I spend a considerable amount of time looking at people's CVs, I think the concept of a CV is a little bit outdated!  I think we need to think of  a new more exciting way to sell ourselves if we want to stand out and be noticed. Especially in the creative industries! What do you think? Do you guys have any feedback about the way this CV thing has been structured so far? I would really appreciate your thoughts on the whole thing and how to improve it.

Without further ado, (I've never actually really understood that saying but anyway), here we go:

The first CV belongs to a 25 year old woman who lives in Durban and has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rhodes University and recently completed her studies at the Entrepreneurship Institute of India. She has a drivers licence, speaks English and Zulu and is willing to move to another city if there are employment opportunities.  At Rhodes she studied Industrial and Economic Sociology and History and in India, she did a programme in Small Business Promotion. She also studied at the IMM Graduate School of Marketing and completed a Higher Certificate in Marketing Management.

Work Experience

2012             Interservice Trainee at the Ethekwini Municipality, Arts and Living Cultures Unit
2010 - 2011  Interservice Trainee at the Ethekwini Municipality, International and Governance Unit
2010             PR Officer and Production Asst at Decamm Productions and Iindoni Models
2009             Marketing Assistant at HMS Management Consultants

The Second CV belongs to a fashion designer who lives in Port Elizabeth.  She has a BA Degree in Fashion Design from Lisof as well as a National Diploma in Fashion Design and Technology from the Tshwane University of Technology.  Her beautifully laid out CV came with a step by step guide on how to make a 50's full skirt and her cover letter tells the story of somebody who is not only passionate about making clothing, but someone who has the technical skills to back it up! In 2011 while working as a studio manager at Studio Tiaan Nagel, she was selected as a finalist for the Mr Price Elle New Talent Competition and had a show at SA Fashion Week.  She is 26 years old and speaks Afrikaans and English, has her own car and has recently tried her hand at her own label but I think she needs a little more experience working for somebody more established.

Work Experience

2012             Assistant Designer, Pattern Maker - SilverSpoon Clothing
2011             Assistant Designer, Pattern Maker, Dress Maker - Lunar Clothing
2010 - 2011  Studio Manager, Jnr Designer, Garment Technologist, Pattern Maker - Tiaan Nagel
2010             Shop Assistant, Forever New
2009             Intern, Miss Scarlet Clothing

Her skills include:
Designing, Technical drawing, Pattern making, Grading, Management, Client relations, Cutting, Quality control, Sales and she also makes wedding dresses amongst others.

The Third CV Belongs to a young man! Finally, I've been wondering why I haven't received any CV's from South Africa's young men.  This young man is based in Johannesburg and studies Public Relations and Communications at the University of Johannesburg.  He is 24 years old, speaks English, Sesotho and Zulu and has a drivers licence. He has worked in product promotion, was the events co-ordinator for UJ Arts and Culture and was the editor of the University's student newspaper. He currently has a fashion blog and is looking for a job in fashion, media and PR related industries.

Work Experience

2011 - 2012  PR and Communication Intern and Personal Assistant and Stylist - David Tlale
2011             Part-time PR and Communication Intern - Suzaan Heyns Couture
2011             PR and Communication Intern - Helen Joseph Hospital
2011             Melville Guest House - PR and Communications Intern for the Melville Poetry Fest

His skills include:
Formulation and execution of marketing strategies, product promotion, newsletter compilation, designer and client liaison, event co-ordination.

Whew, that's it for this week. If you would like to find out more about these jobseekers, please send me an email missmillib@gmail.com and I will put you in touch with them.

A VERY HEAVY WEEK

Friday, February 15, 2013

Hey guys
I greet you all with a very heavy heart. This week has not been easy on South Africans and that is one of the reasons this post is coming to you a little late. It's been difficult to carry on with things normally. I have to admit that in the midst of everything that is happening in South Africa - Anene Booysen's rape, mutilation and murder, just one case amongst many in the scourge of gender based violence, the State of The Nation Address and then yesterday's horrific news that Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend in his home, we are shocked, fatigued and still reeling from it all. Yesterday I attended the 1Billion March against gender based violence at Constitution Hill.  I arrived at 4pm and left at 6pm and in those two hours, I kept asking myself ''what are we doing here''? The thinness of the crowd was really disappointing.  There were too few people, no clear leader galvanizing people to action, not enough of a feeling of anger at the many injustices women experience in the hands of men. It was more like an imbizo than a march, with drumming to furnish it.  In the two hours I was there, the group did not make it out to the streets.  From outside Constitution Hill, one couldn't even tell that people were mobilizing inside. There was not a single policeman in sight and the roads were open, cars driving through as if it was any other day. An oddity considering the mess we're in.  I arrived there feeling sad and I left feeling even sadder that such an important cause didn't receive the kind of support it needs to end the violence.  But this is not to say the people that came to make a stand should not be acknowledged for their contribution.  It's not their fault that violence against women is not at the top of this country's agenda.  Our president didn't even isolate the issue in his speech, which was more like a very long and uninspiring oral in which he didn't look up from his typed speech.

When I went to bed last night, I was hoping to wake up feeling a little lighter.  But that's not the case.  As I perused the many CV's I received in the last week, I couldn't decide whether I even wanted to post anything today. I mean whose reading blogs anyway? But when I came across the CV below, I felt it necessary and relevant to find this person a job, because God knows, we need more people doing this kind of work.  I will only post this CV today because of the miasma of dispair that this week has resulted in. I know it's a little dramatic, but I'll post the other two CV's on Monday.

This CV belongs to a female lawyer who has a lot of experience in that she's worked in some of the top firms in South Africa and abroad, but she actually really wants to do legal work for NGO's.  Her work as a Gender Based Violence and Health Attorney as well as her research and advocacy in Aids Research in the last 2 years is the kind of work she seeks.  To contact the person this CV belongs to, please send an email to missmillib@gmail.com

Three Job Seekers, Three Excellent CV's

Friday, February 1, 2013

Happy Friday bahlali

Well I said I'm going to do this and now I'm doing it.  After posting about the lack of employment opportunities for young people in this country on Tuesday, I have had a positive response to the idea.
