Brunch with B-Boy

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Oh me oh my, what a lucky girl I am.  This morning I had the honour and privilege of being invited to a very special brunch courteousy of Marie Claire South Africa and Sunglass Hut with the one and only, one of my favourite bloggers in the world Bryan Boy! It was at Salvation Cafe at 44 Stanley and it was perfect to say the least.  The weather came to the party and so did the spring fashion and fashionistas of Joburg.

We ate, we bubblied and we basically had a very informal Q and A with Bryan about his blogging career, which in seven years, has made him one of the most respected in the blogging business.  He told us the story of how he met his fave, Anna Wintour, how he got the Marc Jacobs bag named after him and the rest of his fabulous life.  He is here to present the Best Blogger award at tomorrow's Marie Claire Prix d'Excellence de la Mode Awards. It was a pleasure to meet you Mr Beezy and was very honoured when you wanted to take a picture of me.  Stay cool! Here's some of what went down!

Bryan Boy and his fierce and famous dim lookers.

Meeeee trying to act cool when inside I was doing cart wheels of joy!
Fellow blogger and friend, Sandiso Ngubane
The day turned to perfection when my favourite, Eggs Benedict was declared in front of me. It was so delish.  There are three places that get this right in my experience in South Africa: Lazari in Cape Town, Scusi in Parkview and now, Salvation Cafe.  I have tried this at so many places and more often than not, I am left disappionted and hungry.  Not this time mama, not this time.
If I could swap the blood that courses through my veins for some other liquid, it would most certainly be bubbly.
I don't have a sweet tooth but this cheese cake was waving at me from the other side of the room.
Sarah Badat and Sandiso Ngubane
Love Sarah's little hip accessory...apparently from Sass Diva. Suprise surprise.
Eish, I forget this lovely girl's name but she works for Edgars and she just looked fab.
Marie Claire Fashion Director Sharon Armstrong and Editor Aspasia Karras.  Aspasia is wearing Marion and Lindie.
By far the best moment.  He was like, Oh My God, I love your look let me get my camera.  I am wearing a Doreen Southwood skirt, vintage top, Woolworths headpiece, a Masai necklace I ''borrowed'' from my friend Maria and sunglasses from, Sunglass Hut and a vintage bag from Maria McCloy.

Bumping into my friend Mr Chang was the cherry on top.
And I couldn't leave without snapping the forever looks awesome Dawood.

I am so blessed. Thank you to whoever looks after me in this universe. Now I have to get back to spreadsheets and serious work, write my column, hydrate and sleep because tomorrow's Awards and party is probably going to mimic the end of days.

I mean, really.

Lanvin Fall 2011 Campaign Movie

This is awesome. I love it when carrots are removed from fashionable arses and art can just dance and look foolish and flawless at the same time. This is Lanvin (See Alber Elbaz whom I always confuse with Azzedine Alaia right at the end. Bless him) Autumn 2011 Campaign featuring models Raquel Zimmerman and Karen Elson shot by Steven Maisel. So now everybody is probably going to start relaxing (i.e. other fashion houses will probably follow suit) and stop pretending as if we fashion people wouldn't be the first to get kicked off the island if we were ever to be in an inclusive of all humanity global game of survivor.  This will surely increase the likeability of God's perfect creations and the ones that clothe them.

I now qualify as a grown up!

On Saturday, my friend Nana (the sizzling species below) and I attended an exhibition curated by Murray MJ Turpin at Main Street Life's new gallery, Our Space.  The exhibition was nice and unpretentious and some of the art was really good and some wasn't.  Needless to say, I bought my first piece of art, well Nana and I share it.  I wonder whose gonna have it when one of us moves out.  My favourite collection was by Jana and Koos and I really don't know why I like it but I do.  We bought the fourth work, some gangsta shit that we want to look at for the rest of our lives.

Punch and Judy: A picture is worth a thousand sips.

The most beautiful person who came to buy our punch on Saturday at Irene Market.  All we saw was a set of beautiful white teeth shimmering in the distance, cloaked in denim and begging to be punched.  And punched we did.

These are snippets from my wonderful weekend spent with some of Jozi's coolest people.

Steve Jobs: How to live before you die

Steve Jobs gave this address to Stanford University Graduates in 2005. This is the kind of stuff I wish we all spent more time thinking about. He made something from nothing - people like this really inspire me.

Big Loser

This is not the kind of stuff I usually share over herrr but dayam, something's gotta be said about Jonah Hill's dramatic weight loss.  Look at him before:

I think he is hilarious and have enjoyed most of the movies he's done - Knocked Up, Funny People and Get him to the Greek and I've always wondered how he felt about getting bigger with each new movie.  Some people even said his weight is what makes him funny.  Whatev.  Somebody who loves him clearly said that heart attack waiting to happen look needs to go and now....now he looks like this:

Good for you guy! Good for you. I'm not sure when the MTV Video Music Awards which were last night, are going t play in SA.  He presents an award with Nicki Minaj looking very good for himself.  I myself am on a mission to lose a few centimetres before the Marie Claire awards - I'm running like a mad woman and am only going to drink health shakes today...until I have the Bryan Boy brunch tomorrow. Eish.

Home Coming

Monday, August 22, 2011

This past weekend I went home to East London to visit my family.  Well, I saw them but the reason I went was to go and give thanks to my ancestors for watching my back in this bitch life and this bitch city.  That involved brewing traditional beer and slaughtering a sheep (I will spare you the gory images), washing with some traditional ritual plants and all sorts of interesting things.  But this post is not about that.

Every time I go home since I've lived in Joburg, I always go through old family pictures - I live for the nostalgia in photographs and so I want to share some of them with you.  It started with me looking through my mother's old pics.  She used to be so beautiful (well not that she's not now) like all people in the 70s.  It was a life of Clogs, Sunglasses or Dimmers or iiDimaas as old Xhosa people call them and wide leg bottoms.  Although life in this country at the time wasn't ideal for black people, these pictures made me forget that the times were tough - they looked like they were having such a jol.

My Mother

My mom at The Holiday Inn in Durban circa sometime in the 70s. Which holiday that allowed black people in is beyond me.  Maybe they did.
Tshisa Sana

I remember this two piece so well, it felt like a carpet but it looked really good on - very Chanel.

This is of her on the beach in Durban wearing wide leg jeans, I love that I have the same pair of jeans and shoes today - not exactly the same but wedges, clogs and wide legs are back.
This is my aunt in the day. Loooove the jacket.

My Father
I won't bore you with pictures of him because in all of them he is either graduating or eating.  But here's one taken at his first graduation from Fort Hare University in 1963.

My Siblings and I

My older sister Vuyo, my younger sister Singa, me and my cousin Mlalase in 1993. I was still 8 at the time and this was taken in our new ''suburban'' house.
My youngest sister Qhayiya. She was five at the time, she is now 14.
The ''Pupil Council'' is a a way too intense name to describe 13 year old prefects.
Singa and I in 1997

Me in 1993, I used to hate this pic because I used to think I was ugly because I was so dark skinned.  Thank god I grew up. Black is bloody beautiful.
The following year in 1994.
Vuyo is in the middle in the satin one shoulder Mother Christmas dress at a beauty contest (remember those) in like 1991. When I was old enough (was I even?) to enter beauty contests, I wore the same dress....
.....and came second. My face.  Clearly I didn't like to lose. Ever. All I wanted to do that day was to rip the  plastic guitar I got as a present (it's in that brown wrapping) apart and strangle myself with the strings.
The day I graduated from pre-school in 1990. All I wanted was to get out of that wedding dress.
Qhayiya when she was three. I die at those little hands.
This is what we all look like now.
